Anyone using a Jet Pro with a Gretsch V Non roller Bigsby?
Hi I've just bought a Gretsch Jet Pro, and I'm soon going to order TV Jones Classics (I'll follow Toms 'pic by pic' guide) I want to make it look and sound as much like a Duo Jet a s posssible. Now the obvious perfect match to the Classic Filtertrons will be a Gretsch V-cut B3 (non roller) Bigsby. (looks and soundwise) I'd love to hear from anyone who is using this combination. I know it is possible, there are a number of people on the Gretsch Forum pages who have posted pics of Jet Pros with B3 bigsbys Of course the neck height is 9mm higher on a Japanese Re-issue Duo jet than on the Jet pro... which means it is 9mm higher at the bridge as well... Which means less 'break angle' over the bridge on a Jet Pro When I purchased my Pro Jet, I had a choice in the store of a 'G'- tail-piece or a stock b-5 (horse-shoe) Roller Bigsby. I played them both and the one without the Bigsby sounded MUCH better... more resonant... lively and 'twangy' with more harmonic overtones. The B5 equipped one seemed to be a bit 'dead' sounding in comparison. I think the tight 'break angle' that the bigsby was making to it's roller was killing the resonance So, I did prefer the jet with the less string-over-bridge tension... but would a B3 'non-roller' Bigsby be too resonant for me... I mean could it be over-kill? Too sloppy? I have two other guitars already fitted with B6 Bigsby's (long tail-piece with roller) One of them is an Ibanez Artcore, which came stock with a B3 style, Ibanez made (Fred Gretsch Licensed) B3 style non-roller Trem...which I retro-fitted with a Bigsby B6 (roller) I went home from the store after playing the Jet pros and re-strung the Ibanez so that the strings by-passed the ROLLER... making it the same as it was when I bought it stock (as it was designed to be)... MAN did it sound better! I heard it the way it sounded the day I bought it... more twang.... more resonance...more harmonics! I'll keep it like that now. But I tried the same thing with my Bigsby equipped Les Paul Goldtop (p-90's) and although it sort of set up ok... it sounded sloppy and lost tone...so.... Bottom line is... I'd be keen to hear from anyone using a B3 non roller Bigsby on a Jet Pro Please post a reply... let me know if you think they sound good....better....worse? I look forward to some responses Pasapllum
