Classic Plus/Powertron- Chris Cheney Sounds ?
I´m very interested in havin a CASSIC PLUS or a POWERTRON (with EM-1 mount) for my Gibson Les Paul Studio. Can´t tell the difference. Need sparkle vintage (twang) and growl even as Punch/Pressure in the low's and especially the lower mids. Look for something inbetween the Steve Jones (Early 70's LP Custom) Sound and the Powerfull Punchin Chris Cheney Vintage Guitar Sounds on "The Living End"-Album "Roll On". (I know he used several Guitars for That, Gretsch two Tone, Gibson SG + LP and maybe more).
Important also is the really awsome Sound of my LP (and its wood) shall still stay alive when I play well overdriven.
Hope someone can support me to find out...
Sincerely to all,
Greetings from Berlin, Germany

Chris uses both PowerTrons and Classic Plus pickups.
in the recording of the albums he uses powertrons, but with his current stage set up he has classic plus' in his 6120 and Powertrons in his falcons and Power Tenny (im not sure what pickups are in his signature guitar tho, the final specs havnt been released yet)
for their earlyer albums he used a tenny and an anni, both with standard filtertrons (i think, dont quote me on that, they were defenatly filters, but i doubt they were TV's), then he had an anni with a seymour duncan humbucker (which he rarely used becasue he "lost that unique gretsch sound") and he also has a anni with a P-90 which he used (and still uses occasionaly). he also bought his first white falcon around the Roll On era, and im not sure what pickups he had in there at the recording stage tho. but by time they were touring he had powertrons in it.
in short, there are heaps of ways to get his sound. he mostly uses powertrons and classic plus pickups, but he chops and changes between the two ALOT.
in the studio he uses powertrons (all of modern artillery and SOE was recorded with powertrons) or P-90s (he uses a Les paul Jr in the studio a few times)
it just depends what sound you want. if you want the tone he has in all torn down, maybe the classic plus would be better, but if your going for the prisioner of society tone, powertrons fit it well.
hope that helped. im not sure what any of those would sound in a Gibby, but it couldnt be that bad. is it a 07 model? if it is, then its chambered, and with a chambered body and powertrons, you can probly (just a guess) get close to a duo jet sound, with a bit more kick.
just some ideas to think about
and its good to see that someone in berlin has an intrest in a great aussie band  good on ya

I responded to your post in another thread. Power Tenny pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as the Powertron and Classic plus.
I enjoy the tones on Roll On alot, not knocking any of the tones off of the other albums, but Roll On had the great church bell like Kerrang. Maybe I have a bias towards that album since it was my first TLE album I got. Though, I think "The Room" has a lot of great tones and styles all in one song

Thank You for your comments!!
At this time I'm tending to the Classic plus because I saw on a You Tube Video how Chris played his very clear sounding tennesse but than with probably a tube screamer his guitarsound changed into a powerfull overdrive. On the Living End Album "State Of Emergency" he used Powertrons - but the sound was not that powerful - but also I still don´t know, in which way the thinner wire of an Classic Plus influences the sound. Does anybody know?
I´m sure right know that the Gibson LP and SG are also responsible for the powerful sound of ROLL ON.
Hope that TV Jones will post a comment one day...But I still can wait, for the P-90 in my LP Studio has also great sound - though I prefer Humbucking sound.
Take care...
here I found some infos by Chris himself about the sound of ROLL ON:

yea alot of chris's tone is lost because of his MASSIVE pedal board. it still sounds good, but you lose that true tone of the pickups.
chris also uses a modded tube screamer
and thanks for the link to the interveiw! though his set up has changed alot since then. their old stuff he pluged straight into an amp, but now... wow thats a large pedal board

HE SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT IT IN HIS INTERVIEW http://gc.guitarcenter.com/interview/cheney/

IN POS HE PROBABLY USED FILTERTRONS - HE SEEMS TO USE THE TV JONES SINCE THE ROLL ON ALBUM
hope that helped...
