Pickup choices for a Hamer Artist/Vanguard
Need some help in deciding which pickups to purchase. I just recently purchased a Hamer Artist/Vanguard guitar. Its a 24 3/4" double cut small bodied arch top, semi-hollow all mahogany/one f-hole guitar. Its got Duncan P-90's in it now. I intend to turn it into my travel/fly date guitar. So I want a versatile guitar that's humcancelling. Currently, I use a Grosh Retro Classic with a Fralin V. Hot/V. Hot/Steel Pole 43 set and I like my Epiphone Riviera that has Gibson Minihums in it. So, with these guitars in mind, hopefully giving you what I am used to as a context, I am wanting this Hamer to hopefully provide the following... The bridge position to have the top end clarity of a Gretsch, yet with close to the output and midrange growl as a vintage PAF would have. I love my Grosh with the SP43, but I want this guitar to have the smoother dynamics of a PAF without completely losing the punch and top end clarity of a Gibson/P-90 single coil sound. I am thinking the Powertron or Powertron + would get me there. What do you think? Now, for the neck... I love the Fralin V. Hot in my Grosh and typically, I've always fought most P-90/mini hums/PAF's in the neck position. They are usually not percussive enough or have enough clarity. So, I want more of the classic Alnico polepiece sound in the neck position of this guitar, but humcancelling. Plus, I want it to match well with the bridge pickup, so how the neck and bridge interact is also very important. I am thinking a Magnatron in the neck. Of course, both would be in the P-Tron mount style. Am I on the right track? I would highly value your input on this.
