P'Tron in DeArmond 2000 mount G'Day TV,
Im new at the whole guitar mod thing so forgive me if i get some things wrong or make some silly mistakes....
I am considering purchasing a PowerTron to replace the bridge pickup in my G5125 (DeArmond 2000 equipped) and noticed that when i remove the pickup it appears that the pickup cover (chrome) is welded to the pickup underneath, ear where the wires are connected, hence making it impossible for the pickup to come out and eventually replace with the P'tron.
Is this usuall? Do i have to forcefully remove the welded part to replace the pickup?
For convience i've posted a picture, (its the neck p/u but its the same for the bridge one too).
Also, once i replace it with the P'Tron, how would i go about securing the P'Tron to the cover? Would i have to weld it again?
Thanks for any help
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
There doesn't seem to be much going on in this forum so let me see if I can help.
It's common for pickup covers to be solderd on to the pickup. Normally the procedure would be to unsolder the pickup wire from the pots, take out the entire pick and replace it with a new one. That's not very hard to do but it does require some tools and soldering skills. There are a lot of helpfull tips on that al over the internet. In your case you would have to order some powertrons in a dynasonic style mounting option. These are made to replace dearmond style pickups. Don't confuse powertron with p'tron because one is a pickup type the other a p90 style mounting option.
Hope this helps

If you want to replace the old Pup I would take the whole thing out. It does not make any sense to take a pickup apart unless you are going to work on it(as in rewind or repair it. Pup wire is really thin so stay clear of it as it is easy to trash a unit. Unsolder the pickup from the pots and install the new one. There seems to be a number of options for mounting the TVs. That is if you are going to. I gave TV a call and they were very helpful in the mounting department I am sure they can help you out.
Lots of old Pups have soldered covers you can just unsolder but beware older units have dry glue and the bobbins may fall apart on you which is something that just happened with an old Charlie Christian Pup I took out to work on my late 20's early 30's? Gibson 150. I had to have Lindy Fralin restore the whole unit for me. Next time I will be a bit more careful. The old glue they used disintegrates after fifty or sixty years or so.
PS where are you located?

Aspromusic,
I had to take the pup out of the cover because covers arn't included with the TVJ Powertrons, but i did it in the end with a cutting device on a Dremel. Worked perfectly.
Im in Australia.
