Pups for an "Annie" copy 5120!
I just figured out the perfect set of pups for my 5120! .....well; it'll work for me; anyway. I was trying to decide which pup to put in the bridge position to go with the Maggie in the neck slot for my 50th Anniversary 5120 "Orange Annie" Anniversary copy I'm building....yeah; with the black headstock overlay with no binding, and no binding in the F-holes, the 5120 is really close in design to the Annie. And since I discovered Gretsch(due to Duane and Chet)back in 1958, and since I just bought a new 5120(to replace my '63 Gent)here in 2008, then this 5120 really IS a 50th Anniversary Gretsch event! So yup; "Orange Annie" she will forever be! ....I know; if I'd have thought of this sooner; a Sunburst 5120 would have been a better choice since even the dark stain at the edges of the soundboard would have hidden the fact that the black binding stripe is missing on the 5120. But with the Duane and early Chet influences at work, I'm really a Big Orange Gretsch fan at heart! Anyway; back to the pups. The original Gretsch Anniversary model(also released in 1958! What a great year!)had Filter'Trons. Other Annies came along and had HiLo'Trons. Suddenly it became very simple(to my simple mind). An Annie copy should have Maggies! What sits right there between Filter'Trons(TV Classics)and HiLo'Trons(TV-HT)? Why; Maggies of course! Eureka! But it's an easy choice for me though; I've been considering Maggies for some time now, just been having a little trouble deciding just which pup to put in the bridge slot to go with the Maggie at the neck, Classic, Classic+ or another Maggie. Since I have a tone pot harness, which is a single-coil kinda Gretsch standard going way back before '58 and still used today on singles, and since the Maggies; which are kinda single-coil in character themselves; they should be a good match to my guitar as well! But Yup! If anyone wants to make an Annie copy out of a 5120, why; Maggies could be a good way to go! ....and I still think that there should be a "US Flag" decal offered with each set of pups(or even for sale...I'd gladly pay!) that says "Voiced in the USA"! It would sure look good on the back of the headstock right next to the words "made in....." Hey; the stickers are already on the pups where they're hidden. Why not another one where it could be seen!
