Rolling down the volume cuts treble recommended capacitors? Hi I stuck some filtertron type TV Classics in my Aria FA 80 and they do sound STELLAR but I am a pig for treble and find I lose more of it than I would like when I roll down the volume knobs.
My question is: what would be a good value cap to put on the volume knobs to balance this out?
As I said I am a treble pig but OTOH I don't want to over do the caps because I know that can be pretty harsh.
Call me lazy but I am not too wild about reaching through the F holes and pickup holes to dig those pots out and fumbling aroundtrying to get them back in so I guess I am asking for what would hopefully get me in the ball park the first time and save me having to keep doing the exercise over and over again.

I recommend a .001 capacitor and a 150K Resistor in parallel on lugs 1 and 2 on a 500K pot.
The resistor will help give you a fuller sounding treble when the pot is lowered.
Thanks,
TV Jones

Just for the general edification of anyone who might be following this.
I tried putting the cap and resister in parallel first, exactly as suggested, and exactly as Mr. Jones said the treble response was better at lower volumes. Unfortunately the roll off "curve" of the pots ends up kind of adversely effected and IMO hard to use when you do it that way so after doing some checking around I tried putting the cap and resistor in series, and that seemed to produce nearly the same effect but with what IMO was a more usable volume curve.

Yeah it's called the treble bleed mod if you didn't already know that or figure it out by now.
It's the first thing I do to all of my guitars, especially when using TV Jones/Filtertrons. You need to keep that sparkle that would get lost otherwise.
Such a cheap mod too! What, $2 or something like that from TV Jones?

It's a common mod. But I keep my tone switch guitars (Tennessee Rose HT and Reverse Anniversary) stock and use the volume controls as tone controls. Works for me.

So don't you ever just want to use volume controls as volume controls?

Hi there dennis!
For your interest on this subject check out my posting and diagram on Jan 4th 2008 re high pass filter.

I find it works great, doesn't mess with the volume taper and gives the tone control more range.
I use Mr Jones choice of a .001uF cap but no resistor. Also i use 500k
pots with TV Jones pups but it works with 250k pots as well.

I have the exact same problem with my classics. I tried EVERYTHING to cure this problem but the bleed circuit screws up th curve of the pot totally. I know your supposed to use 500k pots with humbuckers but i found by simply switching to a 250k pot, the treble lost becomes almost in-audible when turning down your volume, eliminating the need for the bypass circuit totally. thereby keeping the curve of the pot correct, at least for the way most people are used to them. the exact pots i used were solid shaft 250k pots, fender brand. dont know who makes them but you can get them almost anywhere, the ones in th little "Fender" bag. you lose a little high end, but to me the trade is worth it.
