Are the pots that come in the G5125 good pots? are there better ones to use as replacements?

Darned good question and one I'm asking about the newer 5120s as well. I had originally planned on swapping out my harness with a new TV Jones harness in its' entirety...which for best of all worlds, is a darned good idea I'm sure. Here lately though I've been hearing good things about the stock harness coming with the Gretsch 512X series. The one on my 0712 5120 has what seems to be full-sized pots which have a real good feel to them and exhibit no noise or static at all while fiddling with them. If they don't act up at all; I'll go ahead and swap in new TV Classics and take a serious listen. One iota of static, and out goes the offending pot(CTS Pots seem to be the standard when it comes to replacements). Two incidences of noise and out goes the entire harness! But I've had my new guitar for quite a few weeks now and have no complaints about the harness. Even the selector switch is solid but clickless through the amp and the chrome knobs are delightful! ....assuming no audible clicks is a good thing.

Well, i was asking because my neck pickup pot was going out. Started by making noise, then cutting out intermintantly then It finally did, so i went to my local guitar center and got a new proline pot, and installed it. Now i have no trouble at all. On top of that I installed tv classics and my G5125 just sings! No noise from electronics, just the sound of me playing. The harness seems very thin probably 22 gauge wire. Are the TV harness any thicker? Oh yeah, when you turn down either the bridge tone or the neck tone all the way down does your guitar go mute? shouldnt this act like the pickup selector? should just lower one right?

So far all my pots are still sounding quiet*knocks on wood*but I see what you mean about the gauge of the wire. The main wires are what seems about right, but the wires going directly to the pots are rather skimpy looking at that. But looking at the graphic of the TVJ harness makes it difficult to tell if they aren't about the same gauge as well. Can't be sure, hopefully someone who has made the swap can shed some light. What you describe about the way the pots function is.....normal. Yup; that's how it is. There is some balancing function available then....suddenly....mute. It's actually designed that way for our guitars. Not traditionally Gretsch for sure, but it is some kinda industry standard in some circles. .....it was a topic reciently on the Gretsch Pages.
