TV Classic or Power'tron or both... Hello,
I want to change my Tennesse Rose's pickup. I don't really know which pickup I want between those. I search a warm and ample sound in neck position and a rock and crunchy sound in bridge position.
I 'm french so excuse my bad english writing.
Thanks.

Nobody can help me, please ?
Power Tenny- 03-20-2008
well i have a power tenny (suprise suprise) so im gunna be bias and say go for the powertrons!
im one of those who live for rock music, and the powertron delivers.
ive always been interested about droping a classic into the neck position, but im happy with the powertron thats in there now, and im not about do pay 200 bucks for a pickup im hardly ever gunna use (im more of a bridge pickup man), when im already 100% happy with whats already in it.
classic plus' are another option you can consider, but for me, powertrons are the way to go. its one of teh reasons i went for the power tenny over some of my other options

How about a PowerTron at the bridge (rockin') and a SuperTron at the neck (mellow)?
Power Tenny- 03-21-2008
how often do you even use the neck pickup?
id say save your cash and buy a powertron for the bridge, and then if you feel that your neck pickup is lacking somthing, go for a replacement, but if your anything like me, and live on the bridge pickup, it would be the best way to go, (ive removed the switch on a les paul because i only ever used the bridge and the pain in the ass switch got in the way)
its not like the stock filters in a gretsch are bad pickups anyway. i only go for TV's becasue i play mostly punk, and the powertrons just give it a little extra kick

I contacted TV Jones and here is my message...
"Hello Mister Jones,
I hope you don't mind if I approach you about a hard choice.
I would like to change my Tennesse Rose's pickups (High Sensitive Filter'Tron, lack of personality). I don't really know which pickup I want between Power'Tron and TV Classic (or an other one who knows ?). I search a warm and ample sound in neck position and a rock and crunchy sound in bridge position. I heard about a combination with a Power'Tron at the neck and a TV Classic Plus at the bridge, is that a good way for this ? I really don't search "The real sound of Gretsch", I like the precision of TV Classics but it seems too incisive for me. I play rock, kind of blues, and experimental music. I want a responsive sound like a folk guitar, my sound is always crunchy so I need defined pickups and a ratio low/high must be really equilibrated (It's the reason why I told you about folk guitar). At the neck, I think about Jazzmaster sound, really low but not to dark to keep a clear audio spectrum. At the bridge, my reference is the sound of David Eugene Edwards who plays with a Tennessee Rose too (Sixteen Horsepower, Wovenhand), much attack and precision.
So, my request is a little capricious, but it's really difficult to make a choice between all your excellent pickups.
Thanks in advance to take time to answer me.

...and his answer :
"Nicolas,
I like your idea of a Power'tron in the neck and a TV Classic Plus in the bridge. The overall tone would be a full,. but clear neck position, and a bridge pickup with Gretsch twang and natural mid punch.
Both work really well with gain pedals, such as a Tube Screamer.
Thank you for your interest,
TV Jones"
For those who are interested...

i've got a Powertron Plus in the bridge of my Jet (rocker position) and a Magnatron in the neck (perfect cleans) and that combo makes it easy to use, say, a class A amp and switch between cleans and crunch sounds with the guitar itself.
That's my 2 cents. . .

I think about a Super'Tron at the neck and a Classic Plus at the bridge. Anyone tries this combo ?

I am afraid that Power'Tron is too midrangey, I search a warm and fat pickup at the neck and Super'Tron seems very deep...Is anybody knows it ?

So, finally I opted for a Powertron and a Classic Plus. Simply terrible ! Really warm, dynamic and audio spectrum is really equilibrated. It was filtertron before, now I have a new guitar. The classic plus is very defined, I have a little the same sensation as on a Telecaster with more punch and more body, and a lot of reactivity : I love it. The Powertron is VERY FAT ! Big, big sound. It is really defined too, warm and extremely large. I have no regret, I have a large spectrum which goes from a deep sound to a opened sound. Futhermore, I usually don't use the middle position because I find it has no character, but now the spectrum is so large that the middle position can be use like a sound full-fledged which joins the intense personality of the powertron and the classic plus. Conclusion : AWESOME !
Thank you Mister Jones !

That has to be the best comment ever! I know it's a "lost in translation" thing, but it's very charming! :D
Congrats Nico!
I have a Classic Plus in the bridge of my 6120, and it's exactly as you've described. It does get some Tele tones, but it's very punchy. I'm glad I went that route.
If you can record some clips, I'd love to hear the Powertron and C+ together!
