Oh No! Panic time!
Been doing a lot of soul searching about my old Gretsch Country Gentleman, and up until now had been thinking it had two standard Filters on it, but I could very well be wrong; I didn't actually buy it till 1966 and my memory is a bit cloudy about back then, but the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking it did have one Super. So yeah; it may have had a Super'Tron on it after all, and that could add to the over-all fun!
That's kinda cool since I've been listening to lots of Chet here lately and I seem to be drawn towards the warmer newer stuff. So a Super and a Classic may well be the pups of choice. No big deal though, the Super is slotted between the Classic and the Classic Plus in sound characteristics, so I won't be venturing too far afield.
Panic time though cause I only gotta couple days to decide!
........I'll let the CD "Chet Atkins Picks on the Beatles" decide. I absolutely love the sound of Chets' Gretsch in that one(naw; I don't think it's the 12 string on the cover!). Now if I can research the CD/LP and lock down the fiddle used.....!
......I dunno....Classics are just so......safe.

"The thread that will not die!"
Thank goodness I don't get my Economic Stimulus Check for a couple more weeks yet! Yup; I intend to help stimulate the Poulsbo area a bit!
But yeah; still trying to figure out just the right pup combination.
Anyway, had lots of fun yesterday, and the kids helped! I saved all the sound clips for the Classics and the Maggies and the Supertrons and had them so they could be arranged and rearranged by the kids on my desktop in such a way that I couldn't see what I was listening to and I could bounce around through all the clips and take notes.
Arrrrrgh! I can see why lots of folks have lots of guitars!
One thing is rather clear to my ears and tastes; and that's that the Classics are very versatile indeed!

Ya-Hoo, Wa-Hoo, Yi-pi-ki-yo-ki-yea! Just ordered my new pups!
After all these months of....only got one fiddle; gotta get it right the first time....thinking and figuring and planning and soul searching and other phrases I can't think of right now; I finally ordered my pups!
I really love the Dynasonic sound of the early Chet and Duane. I also really love the warmer mellower sound of Chet in the mid 60s, which is what I had with my '65 Gent.
I'm quite sure I could have come close enough to the Dynas with the Magnetrons, and I'm quite sure I could have gotten close to the Supertron sound with the uh; Supertrons. But sometimes I wanna play like the Dynas and some times I wanna play like the Supers. I guess I just wanted it all at the same time.
Maybe one day Tom will supply a slide-in quick disconnect mount to allow a simple easy swap of pup type to pup type to match the whim of the day, but for right now a truly versatile pup is the answer, and "Versatile" seems to be the code-word/catch-word for the Classics. And since I have, and will only have; One Electric Guitar......
I though long and hard about which finish to get too. I found the Gold on my 'ol Gent to fade away way too quickly, so I pretty well eliminated Gold for that reason. I had strongly considered Chrome because of its' durability, but heh, heh, heh; the dust is hard to clean from under the strings and my current Dumbuckers in chrome look dusty all the time!
That leaves Nickel. Hmmmmm, dust may show up a little less, and the Nickel may look a little less garish than the Chrome nestled inside the Gold Gretsch surrounds. Not only that, but I've noticed that I'm starting to be drawn to the "Old Gold" look of the Nickel which reminds me more and more of what a '58(my favori-*test*-('") year of all time!)6120 would look like today without the trauma of watching all that delicious Gold fading away. Shucks; I may swap out the rest of the Chrome hardware on my 5120 for Nickel one day!
So anyway; Yup; the Pups have been ordered; a set of Classics in Nickel with Gold surrounds. Excuse me while I go press my nose to the front window glass.
....now; where the heck's that darned truck?!

Well; they're here, and they're in and....they sound great!
I also seem to think that they're more than just a little amplifier dependent. The better the amp, the better they sound.(probably no surprise there.)
Since my Grandson has been using my "Better" amp cause it has more features and gizmos, I've been using my simpler amp for my own use. The "lesser" amp was tending to hide some of the personalities of the new pups. I've been going back and forth between the two amps, and the better one certainly brings out the best of the Classics.
Now I hafta get an even better amp to really get the best out of them!
These pups of course were designed in the tube era; so tubes it's gotta be!
